Getting into italian culture in the italian way!

Written by Diego and Lorenzo

All'inizio sembrava un compito impossibile!

Stay tuned!

These last couple of weeks have been super fun but they’ve also helped us start to feel like real Italians. We don’t talk like them yet, but we start eating and seeing what they, something is something!

Dear friends from the Internet:

Almost a month has passed since we got to Lecce and it seems that though this epoch of the year seems to be one of the least busy, there are many things to do to amuse yourself and to prosper culturally.

In relation to the voluntary and to the office work, during these two weeks we have been quite busy creating and planning our own project. A cultural youth exchange with young people from different countries. Thanks to our counselors we learned the crucial points on this topic, understanding why are these activities important not only for the participants but for all the people involved and their communities. Initially it seemed like an impossible task ! To create a "serious" project for the European Union to designate a budget can be scary at first, specially being our first time doing this type of task. Nevertheless, we were learning stepwise with our coordinators how to design it. How to have the suitable idea, how to identify the needs that we wanted to try to replace, how to make it work, how to search and to get in touch with the partners.. .. Let's hope that they approve it ! We are optimistic, though we know that we must treat this project as a test with which we learned and to improved our skills for, in a future, putting them into practice again.

Although we spent most of the time this week working on the project, there was also another important event that would change our afternoons forever... we started going to Italian classes! (Almost) Every afternoon after being in the office we will learn a language that is becoming a little more familiar everyday. Though I (Diego) personally find the language difficult to understand, I feel that little by little I am learning to formulate sentences and to express myself in a more comfortable way.

We miss going to the centers, which is for now our favorite activity. Last week we went to the one that is located southern of the entire Salento peninsula, in Alessano. There we discover that Salento and Galicia have both a Finisterrae. It is not the only similarity ! Galician language is similar to the dialect of this area. You can’t imagine how surprised we were when we discovered that while in Galician we would say ‘‘hoxe teño fame’’ here they would say ‘‘‘osci tegnu fame’’, pronounced almost the same. At Alessano we met the countryside and its residents, who form a great family.

Regarding the activities related to leisure... we don’t have any complains! We are discovering incredible places that make us fall in love harder every day with the city. During these days, we had the opportunity to walk around Belloluogo park and its impressive cemetery⚰️, which impressive architecture left us impressed, since it does not look like the cemeteries in Galicia. We also taste one of the typical foods of Salento ... the horse meat. Regardless of what you may think... it's one of the tastiest meats I have ever tasted ! It may be because of how it was cooked, but it had a delicious flavor and a very nice texture.

We have also visited our first museum in Lecce. In the MUST we find all kinds of modern and contemporary art. Although it is new and still a bit empty it was super interesting (and cheap) to visit it. We recommend! And, since we are with the recommendations, we can not forget about Ciro, a small place near Porta Napoli with delicious and cheap Neapolitan pizzas. We can not stop going there!

We have to say goodbye, but we won’t forget one of the most important events for the culture and the Italian society.  This year we’ve been able to enjoy like real italians the festival of San Remo. We all put on our best outfits to enjoy the gala projected at our friend Paolo's house. With wine and pasta the objective of the night is to judge and comment on the outfits, the hairstyles and the songs of the participants.

Hopefully you liked the post and do not get bored with us, because we have much more to tell! Stay tuned!
