My European Solidarity Corps experience is located in Lecce, in the South-East of Italy.

Lecce is a historical city that is full of antiquities, students and tourists. There are a lot of things to visit in Lecce like the cemetery, the main piazza Oronzo, or the Duomo. Even though Lecce is a club - free city, the nightlife is full of options with small bars and pubs, always full of people.

I’m staying on a massive flat quite near the city centre (15-20 min) that I shared with Diego, a Spanish girl named Alba and a Romanian one called Maddie. The four of us have big rooms with terraces. The two girls are also part of the European Solidarity Corps but on a different program and organization. Thus, we learnt how to cooperate with other organizations and how to share our lives with other people.

Our program is called Imagine and is developed by SEYF (South Europe Youth Forum), a youth organization with the goal of fighting for human rights. Even though SEYF is a growing company that is always changing, we worked on two main levels. One is focused on the youth and the attempt to help it grow, evolute, and become a smart part of society. With this intention we developed different projects that tried to bring to young students topics like structured dialogue, entrepreneurship, equality or tolerance. These projects were promoted on high schools, but also on Youth Exchanges with youth organizations from all over Europe. With the implementation of these programs we were able to see from the inside the process of creating a Erasmus+ project, from the first ideas to the realization of the activities and until the follow up.

On the second level, SEYF is invested with the refugee crisis here in south Italy, as NGO involved in the care of migrants and refugees. We try to help them to get more integrated at social and cultural level, while they are waiting for a response on their refugee status as soon as possible, so that they can try to start a new life. As the situation with the government of the country is getting worse and worse, we face more and more obstacles to do so. At this moment, the amount of refugees getting the refugee status is getting closer to 2%. This part of the program allowed us to see a part of reality that we had never seen before and it made us realize how lucky we are and how unfair life is.

Being a part of Imagine and ESC is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I find it very useful not only for the million things that I’ve learned about the topics SEYF is invested in. Just the fact of working with talented and experienced people granted the numerous things that we learned about work space, work relationships or work ethic.

I would really recommend it if, as it happened to me, you are not sure about your future and you want to get out there to learn and experience from others.
