“I’m praying that God will help me and give me documents so I can go to the United States and see my father’s grave.

My name is Best and I left Nigeria because the medical care is bad and my family are unwell. I wanted to go to Libya, I had to move into the world. I didn’t have a choice, I had to go. A lot of families think that their people are okay in Europe but a lot of people die on the way. Across the desert, in the sea, in Libya.

When I arrived in Libya, they were treating people bad, beating people. They killed the person that I was working for. I had to run and I had no money, so I had to sneak into the place with the boats at night. They didn’t see me. I was lucky, God was on my side.

There were a lot of people on the boat. I never knew that the sea was so big. We felt that we are lost at sea. We tried to cry for help and finally, we saw a helicopter and they sent a rescue ship. When I arrived in Sicily I suddenly felt alive. Just like when you move from a fire and you arrive in a better place. I felt good. I was thanking God. I pity anyone who is taking that road because I had God with me but I am ready now – I am proud to stand and speak as a refugee".
